What is Bioheat® Fuel and how will it change your home – and our world – for the better?
As a multigenerational family-run business, we at Scott Energy understand the importance of keeping your loved ones warm while addressing the impact of climate change. All progressive heating oil dealers have embraced the need to reduce carbon emissions now in order to protect the environment in the future. The good news is that heating oil is the only fossil fuel capable of addressing CO2 emission reduction today at no cost to you, the consumer.
Before inviting anyone new into your home, you probably get to know them a little bit. Keeping that in mind, we’d like to introduce you to Bioheat® Fuel, the newest upgrade to your home heating system. We’re here to tell you more about this new, eco-friendly fuel and hopefully answer any questions you may have. If there’s anything we don’t touch on, one of our industry experts would be happy to speak with you!
What is Bioheat® exactly, and how is it superior to traditional home heating oil?
Bioheat® is a blend of biodiesel and ultra-low-sulfur heating oil (ULSHO). It is our industry’s greatest response yet to the ongoing climate crisis. Decades of research have allowed scientists to create a biodiesel fuel blend that not only runs cleaner than traditional heating oil, but is made of sustainable materials. Since biodiesel is made from renewable resources such as used cooking oil, inedible corn oil, animal fats and soybean oil, we accomplish a few different goals all in one fell swoop:
- We reduce our carbon footprints in both the beginning and end stages of our fuel’s lifecycle by using renewable resources in production and by producing fewer harmful emissions during use.
- We save you money. Because Bioheat® runs more cleanly and efficiently than traditional heating oil (and is compatible with your existing equipment), there is less need for repairs and the lifespan of your equipment is extended.
- We lower our dependance on foreign suppliers by using resources that we already have domestically, and we increase employment rates and income levels for farmers by creating a demand for their by-products.
Are there different blends of Bioheat® available?
Yes! There are currently three classes of Bioheat® on the market that are differentiated by the amount of biodiesel present within each blend. Using an easy-to-understand notation system of the letter ‘B’ followed by a number (which represents the biodiesel percentage present in the fuel), we differentiate the blends as follows:
B2 – B5 (2% to 5% biodiesel): Bioheat®
B5 – B20 (5% to 20% biodiesel): Bioheat Plus (This is the blend we offer here at Scott Energy)
B20+ (>20% biodiesel): Bioheat SuperPlus
Do I need to buy special equipment to make my traditional home heating equipment compatible with Bioheat®?
No! Bioheat® has been tested extensively by equipment manufacturers and doesn’t require the modification of existing equipment or the purchase of new heating equipment.
